Nvidia links custom AI chips to its data-center platform

Nvidia plans to invest $3.5 billion in MediaTek and give the chipmaker access to NVLink Fusion, Nvidia’s high-speed interconnect technology. The arrangement would allow MediaTek to design custom AI chips that work alongside Nvidia infrastructure in standardized data-center racks.

The companies already work together on AI PCs and automotive systems. In data centers, the new agreement points to a broader Nvidia strategy: cloud providers may increasingly want custom processors instead of relying entirely on Nvidia GPUs, but Nvidia can still remain central if those chips connect through its infrastructure.

Why it matters: The competition in AI computing is shifting from selling individual chips to controlling how entire systems fit together. Compatibility with Nvidia’s platform could be valuable even when Nvidia does not supply every processor in the rack.

FDA clears a limited Apple Vision Pro surgical system

The FDA granted De Novo authorization to Stryker’s SportSuite Vision, a surgical display system built around Apple Vision Pro. For certain minimally invasive hip impingement and labral-repair procedures, the system can place CT images, arthroscopic video, and Stryker software in a virtual display.

Stryker says a Duke Health surgeon completed a procedure using the technology after laboratory, cadaver, and operating-room testing. The authorization is narrow, applying to specific hip procedures rather than surgery broadly.

Why it matters: This is a meaningful regulatory step for mixed reality in clinical use. The central test is practical: whether a head-mounted display can improve a surgeon’s workflow by reducing the need to look among separate operating-room monitors.

CISA flags two actively exploited PaperCut flaws

CISA added two vulnerabilities in PaperCut NG/MF to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog after finding evidence that attackers are actively exploiting them. CVE-2026-81578 is a missing-authentication issue affecting a critical function, while CVE-2026-82078 involves unsafe reflection.

CISA advises organizations to prioritize remediation, especially where PaperCut systems are exposed to the public internet.

Why it matters: Inclusion in the catalog means these are not merely theoretical weaknesses: they are being used in attacks. Organizations running PaperCut should assess exposure and follow vendor mitigation guidance promptly.

Himalayan floods reveal compounding mountain risks

An analysis of the August 26 flood affecting villages in Nepal and Tibet traced its trigger to a massive rockfall near a glacier on the Tibet-Nepal border. It describes how thawing permafrost, melting ice, and expanding glacial lakes can increase the likelihood of destructive mountain floods, including secondary flooding after an initial event.

Why it matters: High-mountain hazards can unfold quickly and cause damage far downstream. The event also shows the importance of satellite analysis and geological research in regions that are difficult to monitor directly.

NIST identifies priorities for secure hardware standards

NIST published IR 8615, a report summarizing a January 2026 workshop on security across the semiconductor ecosystem. It calls for security practices that extend from chip design and intellectual property through manufacturing, deployment, and end-of-life.

Its priorities include interoperable standards, component provenance, supply-chain security, scalable testing, and collaboration on workforce development. The report does not establish new requirements.

Switch Bioworks is developing engineered microbes intended to provide crops with nitrogen, reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizer. Its genetic switch is designed to let the microbes establish themselves before they begin producing nitrogen.

The company is running trials in six U.S. states, but field performance has not yet been established. The potential benefits remain based on modeling rather than demonstrated results in the field.

Fake CAPTCHA prompts become a route to remote access

Microsoft disclosed TerminalFix, a ClickFix-style social-engineering technique that uses fake Cloudflare CAPTCHA prompts to persuade people to run malicious commands in Windows Terminal or PowerShell. Those commands deploy a reverse-tunnel backdoor, potentially giving attackers remote access to a compromised system.

Why it matters: This technique does not depend on exploiting a software flaw. It exploits trust in a familiar-looking verification prompt. The practical lesson is straightforward: do not paste or run commands supplied by a website, pop-up, or supposed support message.

A fast-food app report makes consumer profiling visible

A Wired reporter obtained a 515-page report on data collected through the McDonald’s app via a freedom of information request. Along with transaction details, it included predictions about how often he would visit in the next six weeks, how much he would spend, and his preferred item.

Why it matters: The example makes consumer data profiling easier to grasp. Everyday purchases and loyalty-app use can support forecasts of future behavior, not simply records of past transactions—an important tradeoff to consider when convenience apps collect detailed data.
