CISA flags actively exploited flaws across widely used products

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency added vulnerabilities affecting Fortinet products, Citrix NetScaler, Google Chromium’s V8 engine, Cisco Firewall Management Center, JFrog Artifactory, ConnectWise ScreenConnect, MikroTik RouterOS, and GitLab Community and Enterprise editions to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.

These are not merely theoretical software defects: the catalog identifies vulnerabilities that have been exploited. Separate reporting said attackers used Cisco Firewall Management Center flaws for credential theft and deployment of Qilin ransomware. Google and Microsoft also issued patches for exploited browser and Windows flaws.

Why it matters: The affected products occupy particularly sensitive places: web browsers, network boundaries, remote administration tools, software-development systems, and security-management consoles. Organizations should identify exposed systems, follow vendor guidance, and consider investigating high-value systems where exploitation may already have occurred.

US battery restrictions could complicate grid-storage expansion

US grid-storage growth relies heavily on comparatively inexpensive Chinese battery cells. But tariffs, tax-credit sourcing rules, and a late-August executive order covering foreign-produced bulk-power equipment are adding uncertainty.

The order specifically includes battery-storage systems, inverters, and transformers deemed national-security risks. Analysts cited by MIT Technology Review expect that, as domestic manufacturing capacity develops, some projects could become more expensive, be delayed, or be cancelled.

Why it matters: Grid batteries help make variable wind and solar power more dependable. The policy challenge is a difficult one: improving supply-chain security can conflict, at least in the near term, with quickly and affordably deploying the equipment needed for reliability and emissions reductions.

ARPA-H backs AI for bounded heart-failure decisions

But a proposed proof is not the same as an accepted result. Independent mathematical validation remains necessary. Reporting has also raised questions about credit and attribution involving researchers working on related AI-assisted fluid-dynamics research. OpenAI later said it had made substantial progress on another unnamed Millennium Prize problem, without releasing a proof.

Mistral raises €3 billion for European AI capacity

French AI lab Mistral AI says it has raised €3 billion in a Series D round at a post-money valuation above €21 billion. Samsung Electronics led the round, with EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity as co-leads.

Mistral says it will expand its computing capacity, infrastructure, international operations, and services that allow organizations to choose where AI workloads are processed. It has also pledged 1 GW of European compute capacity by 2030.

Switzerland begins a 3,000-workstation trial away from Microsoft 365

Switzerland’s Federal Chancellery is beginning a pilot to move 3,000 workstations away from Microsoft 365, reportedly using OpenDesk. The wider federal administration has more than 54,000 workstations.

This is a pilot, not evidence that a full migration has been approved. Available reports do not provide a complete schedule or rationale for a broader change.

ESA prepares FLEX to measure plant health from orbit

The European Space Agency plans to launch its FLEX satellite with Copernicus Sentinel-3C on a Vega-C rocket from French Guiana on September 15. FLEX will measure solar-induced fluorescence: the faint glow emitted by plants during photosynthesis.

Sentinel-3C will make near-simultaneous observations of atmospheric conditions, land surfaces, oceans, and vegetation.

Why it matters: Measuring photosynthetic activity from orbit could provide a more direct indicator of plant stress and ecosystem function than surface appearance alone. Combining the fluorescence signal with atmospheric and land observations should help researchers distinguish changes in vegetation from the effects of weather.
